Electron - Impact Excitation of Interstellar Molecules
نویسنده
چکیده
Electron-molecule collisions play a crucial role in astrophysical environments where the electron fraction is higher than about 10−5, e.g. in the diffuse ISM, PDRs or comets. We present here a brief review of our recent R-matrix calculations of rate coefficients for electron-impact rotational excitation of interstellar molecules. Our major result is the prediction of emission lines from higher rotational states than previously assumed. Rate coefficients for transitions with ∆j > 1 are indeed found to be significant and in some cases larger than those with ∆j = 1, the only ones considered previously. This reflects the importance of short-range interactions which are ignored in the standard theories. Illustrative results are presented for CH, H3 and H2O.

EEDF MEASUREMENTS AND EXCITATION PROCESSES IN THE VICINITY OF A HELIUM DISCHARGE CONSTRICTION
Axial distributions of plasma and floating potentials, electron number density and the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) have been measured in the double layer (DL) region of an He discharge constriction. Excitation processes in the constriction region are studied. Using a linearization method for the nonstationary balance equations and choosing appropriate discharge conditions, ...
متن کاملThe Excitation of Molecular Clouds and the Emission from Molecular Hydrogen
The observation and theory of UV{excitation of molecular clouds (i.e., photodissociation regions) and the shock-excitation of molecular clouds is reviewed, with particular emphasis placed on the emission from molecular hydrogen. Recent advances in near{IR instrumentation have engendered new observations which are challenging our theoretical understanding of these fundamental physical processes....
متن کاملTheoretical prediction of new dipole-bound singlet states for anions of interstellar interest.
Anions that exhibit dipole-bound singlet states have been proposed as a potential class of molecules that may be identified in the interstellar medium. Using high-level coupled cluster theory, we have computed the dipole moments, electron binding energies, and excited states of 14 neutral radicals and their corresponding closed-shell anions. We have calibrated our methods against experimental d...
متن کاملElectron impact excitations of S2 molecules
Low-energy electron impact excitations of S2 molecules are studied using the fixedbond R-matrix method based on state-averaged complete active space SCF orbitals. Integral cross sections are calculated for elastic electron collision as well as impact excitation of the 7 lowest excited electronic states. Also, differential cross sections are obtained for elastic collision and excitation of the a...
متن کاملElectron-impact resonant vibrational excitation and dissociation processes involving vibrationally excited N2 molecules
Resonant vibrational excitation cross sections and the corresponding rate coefficients for electron–N2 collisions occurring through the N − 2 (X 2 g) resonant state are reviewed. New calculations are performed using accurate potential energy curves for the N2 electronic ground state, taken from the literature, and for the N2 resonant state, obtained from R-matrix calculations. The calculations ...
